These days, physical exercise is less a part of our daily lives, which makes it hard to get moving. There are fewer professions that involve physical activity. We have evolved into a mechanically mobile culture, dependent on machinery instead of muscles to go around. Components of food:-
All living being need food to survive. Different food items provide essential substances to our body. Why do the dieticians suggest that we should regularly take green leafy vegetables, fruits, lot of water? Because green leafy vegetables have iron, vitamins, minerals and fibers. Fruits have vitamins and they are healthy for our body. We should drink a lot of water so that we do not get dehydrated.
The food we eat consists of more than one ingredient. For example, the popular dish Kheer contains rice, milk and sugar, dosa contains dal, rice, oil and salt. The ingredients of all such food items contain different components which are needed by our body. These useful components are called nutrients. The primary nutrients are vitamins, minerals, proteins, fats, and carbs. In addition to these nutrients, our body also requires roughage and water.
Nutrients
One or more components derived from plants and animals make up each meal. These nutrients contain essential elements that our bodies require in order to operate correctly. These constituents are referred to as nutrients. Fats, carbs, proteins, vitamins, and minerals are the names of these nutrients found in our diet. Food also contains dietary fiber and water, both of which the body needs.
Carbohydrates
We need energy to do work or perform various activities. Our bodies get their energy from carbohydrates .Some of the common foods which contain carbohydrates are rice, wheat, potato, banana, sugar, glucose and more. Carbohydrates are mostly found in plants.
Carbohydrates are present in our foods in the form of sugar and starch. Sugars are the simple carbohydrates, whereas starch has a comparatively complex structure. For example, glucose and fruit juices contain sugars, whereas potato and rice are rich in starch.
Proteins
Proteins are needed by our body for its proper growth and repair of worn-out tissues. Hence, they are called the building blocks of a human body. Growing children, pregnant women and sick people need more proteins as compared to others. Animals and vegetation both provide us with proteins. It is well recognized, therefore, that animal proteins are superior to plant proteins. Protein-rich foods include fish, eggs, milk, cheese, lentils, and soy beans.
Fats
Additionally, fats are substances that provide energy and keep our bodies warm.. The same amount of fat provides twice/double the energy than carbohydrates. Animals and vegetation both provide us with fat. Some common foods that include fats are ghee, oil, butter, milk, and meat. Nuts and some seeds also contain fats. Fats are stored in our body under the skin and help to keep us warm. They include numerous vital hormones that control bodily functions and shield interior organs from trauma.
Vitamins
Vitamins are essential for the healthy operation of our body. But the body requires very little of these substances. Vitamins not only maintain the health of our eyes, teeth, skin, and bones, but they also shield our bodies from several illnesses. Deficiency diseases can arise from a lack or insufficiency of vitamins in our normal diet.
There are several names for different types of vitamins, including A, C, D, E, and K. Additionally, the vitamins B1, B2, B6, and B12 make up the vitamin B-complex.. The body uses vitamins for a variety of essential purposes.
Vitamins and there functions:
Kinds of vitamins | Functions |
Vitamin A | keeps skin and eyes healthy. |
Vitamin B (Group of vitamins) | helps in proper functioning of nerves and muscles. |
Vitamin C | keeps blood vessels, teeth and gums healthy, heals cuts and injuries. |
Vitamin D | makes bones and teeth strong. |
Vitamin K | helps in clotting of blood. |
Minerals
Besides vitamins and other nutrients mentioned in the previous sections, our body also requires some elements like iron, calcium, potassium, sodium, magnesium, chlorine and iodine for proper growth and functioning. These are called minerals and are found in different foods in the form of their salts.
These minerals are needed by the body in very small quantities but are extremely essential to maintain good health. Deficiency illnesses are also brought on by a lack of certain nutrients.
Roughage
Roughage is a fibrous, indigestible dietary substance. In our diet, it is a vital component. It supports the healthy operation of our body’s digestive system. However, our bodies do not receive any nutrients from roughage. Although our bodies cannot digest it, it aids in the easy passage of waste, maintains a healthy digestive system, and helps avoid constipation. Food items like apple, orange, pear, cabbage, whole gain flour and whole pulses, contain high amount of roughage. Roughage absorbs a lot of water, which keeps it in the body.
Water
Water is essential for human survival. It makes up almost 70% of our body weight. Water aids in the body’s absorption of nutrients from food even though it itself contains no nutrients. Water helps to keep our body cool and healthy, keeps our skin smooth and glowing and helps in the removal of waste in the form of sweat and urine.
